How to enable Ransomware Protection in Windows Defender?

Windows Defender includes a security feature called "Ransomware Protection" that enables you to activate various protections against ransomware infections. This feature is disabled by default in Windows 10, but it is important that you enable this feature in order to maximize the protection of your computer from ransomware applications that are commonly running.

For those who are not familiarr with the term ransomware, ransomware; is a malware that encrypts data on your computer and requests a fee (ransom) in bitcoin to decrypt them.

Windows 10 Ransomware Protection feature

Windows 10 includes a Ransomware Protection feature that consists of two components for you.
- Controlled Folder Access Protection
- Ransom Software Data Recovery Protection

1.) Controlled Folder Access Protection
Controlled Folder Access is a protection feature that allows you to identify specific folders you want to monitor and to prevent changes to files that are contained in them. This allows all programs, or programs you only allow, to make any changes to the files in the watched folders, which prevents the ransomware from encrypting the documents contained in the folder and making them unchanged.

2.) Ransom Software Data Recovery Protection
Ransomware Data Recovery, which will automatically synchronize your public data folders with your Microsoft OneDrive account to back up your files. Ransomware victims with this feature enabled on their computer can use OneDrive to recover their files if they are encrypted by the ransomware.

Warning: Unfortunately, if you have third-party antivirus software installed on your computer and the real-time protection of Windows Defender is disabled, the Ransomware Protection features screen and the Controlled Folder Access feature will not be available.

How to enable Ransomware Protection in Windows 10
You must enable these two features to enable the Ransomware Protection features of Windows 10. You must configure File Controlled Folder Access and sign in to Microsoft OneDrive to back up your files.

To do so, please follow the steps below

1.) Click on the Start menu.
2.) Type Windows Security and select the search result when it appears. You can also access Windows Security by going to the Settings app and navigating to Update & Security -> Windows Security.
3.) After opening Windows Security, click on Virus & Threat Protection option.
4.) Scroll down and locate Ransomware Protection and click on the Manage ransomware protection option.
5.) On the next page, you will find a brief description of Controlled folder access and a toggle to enable it.
6.) To enable Ransomware Protection. turn on Controlled Folder Access and login to OneDrive so that both features are enabled as seen below.

You can now configure Controlled Folder Access and choose any folder you want to monitor and block from malicious programs.

So, what happens if a ransomware targets files in other folders? The files are affected unless the ransomware is quarantined before it starts to encrypt files on the device. Fortunately, there is a way to secure them.

There is an option on the top of the Protected Folders screen, which says "Add a protected folder". Click on it and choose any folder you want and it will be protected by Windows Defender. The folders can be on any partition or hard drive: they will be secured by the feature.
